Our Class Levels

At Marlins we pride ourselves in offering a quality learn to swim program. Our program consists of 14 levels, engaging children in new progressions at each level and focusing on Water Safety and Survival.

Please be aware, all of our lessons after Penguin are skills based and not age based.

At Marlins we pride ourselves in offering quality learn to swim classes in Mackay Queensland. Our program consists of 14 levels, engaging children in new progressions and games every step of the way! We have a heavy focus on Water Safety and Survival.

WATER FAMILIARISATION: 4-6 month olds

This class focuses on water comfort and water familiarisation. There are no submersions in this class. At this swimming academy Mackay we take pride in our Water Babies and their parents. We respect each baby and their individual needs. 

STARFISH: 6 – 18 month olds

At Marlins we take pride in our Water Babies and their parents. We respect each baby and their individual needs.

PENGUIN: 18 – 36 month olds

This class is aimed to transition the child gently from full assistance with mum/dad to beginning to work more with the teacher with mum/dad still in the water. 

EXPLORERS

This class is designed for children who are nervous, fearful, have had a bad experience or just don’t like putting their head under the water. This class is also aimed for children that have a parent attachment.  

JELLYFISH

In this level children are learning to kick and paddle, to turn around and find a safe exit, float and monkey around the edge of the pool with lots of support.

SEAHORSE

In this level children paddle and kick a short distance and are becoming more independent, with this independence comes less assistance. We are still focusing on water safety at this level.

BEGINNER TURTLE

The emergence of a “flutter kick”, learning streamline position with long paddles and kicks. Back floating and treading water.

ADVANCED TURTLE

Can “flutter kick” and streamline unassisted. Long paddles and kicks with strong breath control, able to get a breath unsupported and back kicking.

BEGINNER KICKER

Starting freestyle arms and kick board skills whilst revising previous skills.

ADVANCED KICKER

Focus is on correcting technique for Freestyle arms, strong back kick and readying for the next level.

BEGINNER BREATHER 1

Combining Freestyle arms, flutter kick and rolling for a breath and developing Backstroke.

BEGINNER BREATHER 2

Revising all skills of Beginner Breather 1 whilst increasing distance, also implementation of breaststroke kick.

ADVANCED BREATHER

Competent and correct technique for Freestyle and Backstroke over longer distance, while furthering Breaststroke development.

STROKE DEVELOPMENT

Revision of Freestyle and Backstroke, emphasis is now on putting Breaststroke together and starting simple Butterfly.

MINI SQUAD

Advancing Butterfly skills and increasing distance and strength in all other strokes in preparation for Squad. learning tumble turns, current competitive starts and finishes. 

SQUAD

Competent in all 4 strokes, improving strength, speed and endurance. Perfecting starts, turns and finishes.

Water Familiarisation

At Marlins we take pride in our Water Babies and their parents. We respect each baby and their individual needs.

Starfish

Penguin

This class is exactly that: TRANSITION – the transition from Starfish (with mum/dad) to toddler classes with a teacher and rules and expectations.

Explorers
